Cape Town - Cape Cobras batsman Stiaan van Zyl missed the chance of becoming just the sixth player to score 1 000 runs in a domestic season - thanks in part to the efficiency of his team-mates.

Final Sunfoil Series standings

Van Zyl required 72 runs in the final Sunfoil Series match against the Highveld Lions to join Rilee Rossouw (1 189 in the 2009/10 season), Barry Richards (1 089 in 1971/72 and 1 064 in 1972/73), Dean Elgar (1 060 in 2009/10), Zander de Bruyn (1 015 in 2003/04) and Stephen Cook (1 013 in 2009/10) in the history books as the only players to have reached the magical 1 000-run mark in either the Currie Cup (from 1889/90 to 1989/90) the Castle Cup (1990/91 to 1995/96) or the SuperSport/Sunfoil Series (1996/97 to date).

Van Zyl was dismissed for five in the Cobras' first innings, and thanks to the performances of his team-mates, the Cobras weren't required to bat again in the match, winning by an innings and 165 runs to lift the title - and claim the R1 million first prize.

Justin Ontong finished the season on 927 runs, six runs adrift of Van Zyl.
