Kimberley - David Wiese has returned to prominence for the Titans, but his five-wicket haul was offset by half-centuries from Rilee Rossouw and Rudi Second as the Knights battled to a decent score on day one of their Sunfoil Series game at the Diamond Oval.

Wiese struggled to impose himself on the Ram Slam T20 competition last month, but took 5 for 44 on his return to the Sunfoil Series as the Knights were bowled out for 290 on the stroke of stumps.

The day’s play ebbed and flowed after the Knights won the toss and elected to bat, with the early loss of Reeza Hendricks being made up for by some steady partnerships in the middle-order.

Opener Gihahn Cloete (30) added 51 for the second wicket with Rossouw (52), who in turn shared a 41-run stand with Second before he edged to second slip from Vincent Moore.

Second confirmed his ability to bat time as he faced 156 balls for his 69, and was only parted from Obus Pienaar (48) after a 93-run partnership that had given the Knights control.

Wiese was the bowler to break the stand, and he went on to grab the wickets of Johan van der Wath, Quinton Friend and Malusi Siboto in quick succession as the Knights fell from 202 for three to 259 for nine.

A last-wicket stand between Werner Coetsee (36 not out) and Corne Dry frustrated the Titans, but Shaun von Berg (3 for 63) trapped the latter off the final ball of the day to set up an intriguing response by the visitors on day two.
