Cape Town - Former South African cricketer Rodney Ontong has been charged by an Irish court after failing to pay his meal bill.

Ontong, 61, was arrested on Sunday as he attempted to leave Flanagans Restaurant in Dublin without paying for his meal, which totalled €21.80 (R325.45).

According to the Irish Independent website, the retired cricketer was brought before the Dublin District court on Monday.

A judge remanded Ontong on continuing bail and he is due to appear again before the Dublin District court on June 19.

The court heard that if he pays the money then the charges against him will fall away.

This isn't the first incident this year that has landed Ontong in hot water.

According to the Belfast Telegraph, Ontong was found guilty of arming himself with a hammer and approaching a doorman at a Belfast pub earlier this year.

Ontong played cricket for Border, Transvaal and Northern Transvaal before retiring in 1995.

He captained Glamorgan on the county scene in the 1970s and 1980s.

Ontong played 367 first class matches scoring 15 234 runs and took 845 wickets.

Since retiring, Ontong has coached Northern Transvaal and served as the director of coaching for Gauteng.
