London - Joe Root's 190 against South Africa in the first Test at Lord's saw him become the sixth England captain to score a century in his first Test in charge.

But having been 184 not out overnight, his exit on Friday's second day - caught behind off fast bowler Morne Morkel - meant that Graham Dowling's 239 for New Zealand against India at Christchurch in 1968 remained the highest score by any Test captain in their first match in charge.

Hundreds by England captains in first Test in charge (player, score, opponent, year):

Kevin Pietersen 100 v RSA 2008
