Cape Town - Heino Kuhn struck a fluent century before a middle-order collapse stung the progress of South Africa 'A' on day two of their one-off, four-day encounter against the England Lions at The Spitfire Ground in Canterbury on Thursday.

The right-hander made 105 (118 balls, 14 fours, 1 six) as the tourists reached stumps on 227/7 replying to the home side's 386 all out earlier in the day.

Kuhn was one of two South African batsmen to shine with the other being captain Aiden Markram who made 71 (144 balls, 11 fours, 2 sixes).

The pair had put on 164 for the opening wicket to leave their side in a strong position late in the afternoon session, before they capitulated after tea.

They lost six wickets for 31 in a dreadful collapse, which included the wickets of Test duo Temba Bavuma (10) and Theunis de Bruyn (11), slipping from 194/1 to their eventual close of play score, which was still 159 adrift of the hosts.

There were also failures for Khaya Zondo (1) and Heinrich Klaasen (0), with Wiaan Mulder 13 not out at the close.

Jamie Porter was the chief wicket-taker for the Lions with his three for 41, while Jamie Overton took 2/27.

Earlier, Junior Dala ended with three for 63, but the South Africans failed to remove key Englishman Ben Foakes, who top-scored with an unbeaten 127 (187 balls, 17 fours), to lift his side to a strong total.
