Cape Town - Proteas spinner Simon Harmer took a rare 14-wicket haul - the first of his career - in helping Essex thrash Warwickshire in their County Championship match on Thursday.

Harmer took 6/92 in the first innings as Warwickshire were bundled out for 283.

The South African then took 8/36 runs in the second innings - his career-best figures in an innings - to finish with match figures of 14/128.

Essex moved clear at the top of the County Championship with their fourth win of the season.

"I finally got on to a wicket that turned properly and it was nice to cash in," Harmer told the club's official website.

Harmer has taken 33 wickets in the County Championship this season so far - eight more than any other spinner.

Harmer last played for the Proteas on their 2015 tour of Bangladesh after making his Test debut for South Africa in January 2015 at Newlands against the West Indies.

The off-spinner has made five Test appearances for his country, taking 20 wickets at an average of 29.40 with best match figures of 7/153.

Harmer extended his Kolpak deal with Essex last month, which will keep him at the English club until the end of the 2019 season.

Players who sign Kolpak deals in England are unavailable for South Africa in international cricket.
