Cape Town - South Africa's Jaco Ahlers shot a final-round 69 to finish five-under par, and in 25th position, at the European Tour Qualifying School - and earn his European Tour card.

According to the Compleat Golfer website, the 33-year-old began the round three shots shy of earning his card, but played a superb final round - including 34 on the back nine - to grab his playing rights at the PGA Catalunya Resort.

Ahlers was the only South African out of the 14-man contingent who made it through to the Final Qualifying Stage to secure his elusive European Tour card.

Those missing out included Dean Burmester, Keith Horne, Jacques Blaauw, Zander Lombard, Erik van Rooyen, Louis de Jager, Bryce Easton, Rourke van der Spuy, Tjaart van der Walt, Jean Hugo, Ulrich van den Berg, Merrick Bremner and Garth Mulroy.

Ahlers, who resides in Centurion, shared his excitement on Twitter calling it "unbelievable" and said he simply "can't describe the feeling".

Ahlers earned his third Sunshine Tour win of the season and a sixth overall title when he cruised to a three-stroke win at the Vodacom Origins of Golf Euphoria, held at the Euphoria Golf Estate and Hydro in October.

Ahlers will compete on the European Tour throughout the 2017 season, starting with the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa in December.
