Erin - Rory McIlroy believes the layout of the Erin Hills course at this week's US Open will allow players to make aggressive shots.

The Northern Irishman - who is a two-time winner at the US Open - walked the course last week then played rounds over the weekend.

"For a US Open venue, it's a little more generous than we have seen in the past," the world number two told the Irish Times

"I think it will allow guys to be aggressive. You can hit a lot of drivers around here and you can be aggressive with your iron shots...the shots off tees are really important, so if you can get really comfortable with those, they say a course is only blind once; so, once you've played it, you should know where to go."

McIlroy has endured a trying 2017 so far, missing a number of events due to a rib fracture he suffered in January. However, he has managed to notch up four top seven finishes in his six starts for the year.

The four-time major winner reported some discomfort last time out at The Players Championship last month, but insists the rib will not be an issue this week.

"It's feeling good," said McIlroy of the injury.

"It's been a frustrating year because it has been such a niggling injury. It sort of comes and goes. I feel like I have figured out what to do to have it not reoccur again, so it is about managing my practice schedule and not overdoing it and making sure I have plenty of energy."
