Cape Town - Lewis Hamilton will focus on 2017, if team-mate Nico Rosberg is crowned Formula One champion.

Hamilton is not giving up on this year's Drivers Championship, but is facing lengthening odds over pipping Rosberg to the title.

Mercedes team-mate Rosberg has a 33-point lead with four races to go ahead of this weekend's US Grand Prix.

Even four wins for Hamilton would not guarantee that he catches Rosberg.

"Try to take it like a man," he said when asked how he would react to a Rosberg title triumph. "You can't win them all.

"Look at all the world champions in the past who have won championships and lost championships, it's part of the game.

"I am in the position right now where there are still a lot of points available, so I'm going to give it everything I've got and still have the belief that anything's possible.

"But then (if not) I'll move on.

"Once it's decided and it happens, all I can do is shape the future, which is next year. So life would move on, we'd go into next season and hopefully come back stronger."

Hamilton believes he has performed well this season, when mechanical failures have not been an issue.

"Obviously this year has been a little bit different in terms of how our performances have been, particularly mechanically, and there's nothing you can do about that," he added.

"But out of the 10 times the car has been good, or whatever it is, I've often done the job with it."
