Biff a bad captain

Most knowledgeable cricket fans judge players on their ability to perform in teams in which they are selected. Had Smith solely played Test matches, perhaps different story, however that was not the case. He captained South Africa in most formats, so I will judge him on all formats.

Can you really compare the achievements of Smith with Cronje or Kepler in one day matches? At least with Cronje (match fixing aside) and Kepler we either lost through by very small margins or through factors out of our control (i.e. rain). Smith came in, our main one day performer (Klusener) got dropped and we subsequently went on to lose by 100+ runs in world cups... and that amid claims by Smith we were the favourites.

Still can't understand why CSA would chose a 22 y old to captain the team.
