Cape Town - Sport24 readers have rejoiced at the return of Springbok and WP flank Schalk Burger from injury.

Burger returned to action after a lengthy injury layoff when he played the last 20 minutes of WP's 29-27 win over Free State in Bloemfontein last Friday.

It was Burger's first appearance for the Cape Town outfit since injuring a knee 18 months ago in the opening round of the 2012 Super Rugby competition.

Capped 68 times by South Africa, Burger, 30, had his comeback delayed through a calf muscle injury, a cyst pressing on his spine and bacterial meningitis.

The illness kept the 2004 World Player of the Year in hospital for six weeks and he spent a further eight weeks indoors after being released.

Burger ran on to huge applause from the Free State Stadium crowd in Bloemfontein and helped WP overturn an eight-point deficit into a last-gasp win.

Here's what Sport24 readers had to say about Schalk Burger's return:

"Burger you legend. Never write this guy off - way too much class." - Pieter Samie

"Geluk skalla ou maat eks bly jy is terug en mag jy nog n paar goeie jare speel voor jy aftree."
- Riaan van der Merwe

"Just take your time Schalkie. A brilliant backup for the Boks next year."
- Claire Serren

"Welcome back Schalk. May you remain injury free from here on." - MJ

"Great to have this legend back. This man has such a fighting spirit, he will only get better and most likely be back in the Springbok Squad, but it will take time." - Tyronne Jardim

"He definitely lifted the intensity of the pack."
- Steve van Rooyen

"Get him off the bench and into the Bok squad.Just think, he could even be on the Bok's bench. Kolisi, Vermeulen and Louw, the best loose trio in the world to start, with Burger as impact later on. No team will be capable of competing."
- Chris in Oz

"Welcome back, KING Schalk!" - Isak Visser

"Welcome back, I can't wait for you to be a Bok again." - Murray Juana

"He got stuck in straightaway and it also lifted Province's game a little. Imagine how valuable he'd be for the Boks. He was a bit rusty being out for so long but that's understandable." - Sean Bagley

"He might possibly have lost some of his magic, maybe. But one thing is for certain, Schalk will still give 110%." - CIO

"Burger isn't afraid of the bench. The bench is afraid of Burger." - CIO
