Chicago - South African paralympian Ernst van Dyk has beaten Australia's Kurt Fearnley by a second to win the 2013 Chicago Marathon men's wheelchair race.

According to NBC Chicago's website, a final burst of speed by the South African at the end of the race sealed the victory.

"It was pretty exciting," Van Dyk said.

"We were together the whole way, playing games, playing cat and mouse."

"I had to dig a little bit more and attacked the corner with good speed," he said after the race.

Although the nine-time Boston Marathon winner prides himself in hilly races, he counts the flat and fast Chicago race as one of his favourites.
