Cape Town - South African 100m record-holder Henricho Bruintjies dropped two bombshells this week as he parted ways with coach Hennie Kriel and pulled out of the World Indoor Championships set to take place next month.

Bruintjies and Kriel are said to have mutually parted ways, with the sprinter set to link up with sprint rival and joint SA 100m record-holder Akani Simbine in coach Werner Prinsloo’s camp. They start training together on Monday. Bruintjies and Simbine hold the SA record at 9.97 seconds - set within a few days of each other last year. The pair are on very friendly terms and already live together.

Bruintjies refused to comment on all the developments this week. And questions remain over the timing of the split with his coach especially with the Olympic Games just a few months away.

Meanwhile, it’s understood the runner from Paarl chose to pull out of the World Indoor Championships set to take place in the United States next month because he wouldn’t have had enough time to acclimatise. Team SA are set to depart on March 15 for the event which starts on March 17.

Bruintjies has just returned from competing at two indoor meets in Europe but the change of coach will definitely affect his plans for the rest of the season.

Athletics SA, meanwhile, this week confirmed the team for the World Indoor Championships which will take place in Portland, Oregon.

Team SA:

Antonio Alkana (60m hurdles), Zarck Visser (long jump), Ruswahl Samaai (long jump), Willem Coertzen (heptathlon), Ofentse Mogawane (4x400m), Jon Seeliger (4x400m), Thapelo Phora (4x400m), Shaun de Jager (4x400m), Sonwabiso Skhosana (4x400m)
