Wayde van Niekerk’s international comeback, after three years out, drew a positive reaction from Team SA relay coach Paul Gorries, who said there was more to gather from the performance than the time.

The defending 400m Olympic champion marked his return with victory at the Gala dei Castelli meet in Switzerland, in a time of 45.58 seconds.

It was more than two seconds off his memorable, world record effort of 43.03 seconds to claim gold at the Rio in 2016.
