Gerda Steyn beaks long-standing SA marathon record

Long-distance athlete Gerda Steyn broke the long-standing South African marathon record in a race in Italy on Sunday.

Steyn, who finished ninth overall in the Xiamen Sienna Tuscany Elite Camp Marathon, stopped the clock in 2:25:28 to beat the 2:26:35 set by Colleen de Reuck in Berlin in 1996 by over a minute.

Steyn, the reigning Comrades Marathon champion booked her spot at the Olympic Games along with Irvette van Zyl who finished 13th and within the qualifying time for Tokyo 2020.
