Cape Town - Leading South African sprinter Akani Simbine continues his hunt for quicker times and respect on the world stage as he leads a male-dominated group of athletes from Mzansi at the two-day Diamond League meeting in London this weekend.

Simbine could only manage fourth spot behind American winner Justin Gatlin in the 100m dash at last week’s Diamond League shootout in Monaco, but the South African will want better as he enters the heats at 14:35 on Saturday in the English capital.

The final follows at 15:50.

Simbine has a personal best of 9.89 seconds, but his season best is 9.95.

Star long jumper Luvo Manyonga, who was injured recently, will be joined by compatriots Ruswahl Samaai and Zarck Visser in his speciality at 13:15.

But this won’t count towards Diamond League points in terms of the season-long schedule, which has Birmingham as the next stop on August 18. Cuba’s Juan Miguel Echevarría will again be a thorn in the side of the South African jumpers this weekend.

The women’s 800m on Sunday is also not a Diamond League race on this occasion and does not feature Caster Semenya.

But the women’s 400m hurdles at 15:29 on Sunday is a Diamond League event and includes Wenda Nel of South Africa.

Nel’s 55.28 is the worst season best in the field, while the two best belong to Tia-Adana Belle of Barbados (54.18) and Rushell Clayton of Jamaica (54.73).
