Different motivations in Merseyside derby

Cape Town - Everton and Liverpool enter the Merseyside derby in contrasting form.

For Everton, this could be the biggest game of the season, but for Liverpool, it isn't even the biggest game of the week.

Over the past few years, this match-up has been tightly contested, but Liverpool are the outright favourites for this derby.

League positions

3rd -  Liverpool: Played 32,  Points 66

9th -  Everton: Played 32, Points 40

When talking about Liverpool, you have to mention the Egyptian sensation Mo Salah. He has scored in 21 of the 31 games, equalling Robin van Persie and Cristiano Ronaldo’s record. This type of form speaks for itself and makes him the favourite to score the first goal (2.95), but punters will need to exercise caution with Salah under an injury cloud. Coach Jurgen Klopp has also shored up the Liverpool defence with the record signing of Virgil van Dijk. Since arriving to the club, he has added much needed composure to the back-line.

With the Premier League top four sealed, Klopp could be tempted to weaken his team selection in preparation for the massive Champions League fixture against rivals Manchester city. Opening up the chance for a shock upset. Everton could possibly produce a performance worthy of beating a weakened Liverpool as they have scored in their last 8 out of 9 games and could use the derby to finish the season on a high.

Leading SA bookies BET.co.za have installed Liverpool as 0.65 favourites, with Everton on offer at 3.80 while the draw can be backed at 2.95.

Kick-off is at 13:30 on Saturday.
