Glasgow - Netball SA has backed Team South Africa to bag a netball medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which kicked off in Glasgow, Scotland, on Thursday.

Buoyed by an impressive whitewash of Team Scotland during a three-match Test series in Cape Town last month, Netball SA president Mimi Mthethwa said the federation was confident of their team doing well in Glasgow.

"The team's preparations have gone very well over the last few months, starting with the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup," Mthethwa said.

"With the successful Test series against Scotland as well as a strong showing by some of our players at the University championships, our players have had the much-needed game-time to be able to fire on all cylinders."

Team South Africa start their pool B campaign against Trinidad and Tobago on Friday, Barbados on Saturday, England on Sunday, Wales on Tuesday and Australia on Wednesday.

The top two teams from their group will progress to the semi-finals.

Twelve countries will be competing in netball at the Games, with pool A featuring hosts Scotland, world number one New Zealand, Malawi, Jamaica, Northern Ireland and St Lucia.

South Africa, who are currently ranked sixth on the International Netball Federation rankings, include a mix of experience and exciting young talent.

"We want to take this opportunity to wish the entire Team SA all the best for the competition and we have no doubt that they will give their all to make us proud," Mthethwa added.
