Glasgow - Following a 7-1 thrashing at the hands of Australia in the women's hockey Commonwealth Games semi-final on Friday, South African coach Giles Bonnet has said his team was not on the same level as their opponents.

"Australia is a great team. We knew that and we wanted to avoid them," said Bonnet after the match in Glasgow.

"This was always going to be a very tough game. If you compare the number of scoring chances they converted, it's a very high percentage.

"They're a clinical team. We're not at their level yet."

South African captain Marsha Cox said the Aussies pounced on the mistakes of the ladies in green.

"In the first half they capitalised on our errors and in the second they outplayed us," said Cox.

"Although we are not happy with the score, there are, as always, many positives. We have scored in every game we've played."

South Africa will face England in the bronze-medal match on Saturday.

"Tomorrow we will get far more space and that's the game we are really targeting," said Cox.

"We predicted that we would be playing England for the bronze medal six months ago. We really want that medal."
