Cape Town - The South African Women's Sevens team has been thrashed by Canada in their first match at the Commonwealth Games.

In the first women's Sevens match in Commonwealth Games history, South Africa went down 29-0 having trailed 24-0 at half-time.

Coach Paul Delport's charges were all at sea from their very first touch of the game and looked completely out of their depth.

Canada, who won bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics, ran in a total of 5 tries.

It won't get any easier for South Africa, either. They take on New Zealand in their second pool match later on Friday (11:52, SA time) in a match they will not be expected to win.

With the top two teams from each pool qualifying for the tournament semi-finals, it is hard to see South Africa challenging for medals.

South Africa's final pool match will be on Saturday against Kenya.
