London - British cycling great Bradley Wiggins joked that he had celebrated too much following the Rio Olympics following a tough day on the Tour of Britain.

Wiggins had to push his bike up a hill on a Lake District climb known as 'The Struggle' during Monday's second stage on the ride from Carlisle to Kendal northwest England and finished nearly 23 minutes behind Belgium's Julien Vermote, who took the leader's yellow jersey.

Former Tour de France champion Wiggins, who won his fifth gold medal in Rio, wrote on Instagram: "Taking things very seriously at the top of the struggle, took my mind off being in a world of pain #onetoomanyginandtonics #wiggins #tob2016"
