Paris - Australian cyclist Richie Porte will join the Trek-Segafredo team from next year with the goal of making next year's Tour de France podium on the Champs-Elysees.

The 33-year-old BMC rider was among the favourites to win this year's Tour but he had to withdraw early on stage nine after falling heavily on a shoulder.

"I am thrilled to finally confirm that I will join Trek-Segafredo in 2019," Porte declared in a statement.

"The Tour de France will still be a huge goal for me, and I am excited to go there to race with a super strong team alongside me, but I will also aim for one-week stage races, like the ones I have won before, and the ones I have never raced."

His new team's general manager Luca Guercilena described the winner of this year's Tour de Suisse as "a remarkable cyclist".

"I am sure he will fit in well with the group of riders we are assembling for next year. We are excited to have him on board!" he added.
