Cape Town - Conor McGregor returns to the octagon for the first time in almost two years at UFC 229 in Las Vegas on Saturday, October 6 against undefeated Russian UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

And if the Irishman's news conference in New York last week is anything to go by, it is going to be a spectacle not to be missed!

In the last 24 months the outspoken and controversial 30-year-old McGregor famously took on - and lost to - boxing superstar Floyd Mayweather via a 10th round TKO.

McGregor has an octagon record of 21-3 with 18 knockouts.

In comparison, Nurmagomedov, also 30-years-old, is undefeated in his 26 fights to date, with eight wins coming via knockout.

Leading SA bookmakers Sportingbet have installed Nurmagomedov, nicknamed 'The Eagle', as 3/5 favourite, with McGregor on offer at 27/20.

Sportingbet confirmed to Sport24 on Wednesday that there's been an influx of money waged on the fight in the past few days, with underdog McGregor receiving the majority of the support.

Either fight fans are betting with their hearts, or they sense an upset.

Nurmagomedov claimed the vacant UFC lightweight title with a five-round unanimous victory over Alexander Iaquinta at UFC 223 in April of this year.

The fight is due to start at 06:00 SA time on Sunday, but won't be broadcast on TV.
