Cape Town - A top UFC fighter was put behind bars early Sunday morning after being arrested for assault.

News first broke of the arrest via the Sherdog forums and was later confirmed by the Spokane police department according to Nick Strickland from MMALatestNews.com.

Julianna Pena (7-2) was arrested and charged with two counts of assault by the Spokane Police Department. According to the jails online inmate information, Pena was arrested at 2:20 am and booked into the Spokane county jail at 2:53 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Ferguson said officers were called to a fight outside a Spokane bar.

After a brief investigation Pena, who identified herself as a professional fighter, and one other person were arrested. Pena was later released on $2,000 bail on Sunday afternoon.

The UFC is “aware of the situation” and “in the process of gathering more information”, according to Dave Sholler (UFC senior VP of public relations) who spoke with MMAFighting.com late Sunday.

Pena has three straight wins inside the Octagon and is considered one of the promotions future stars.

Coming off a unanimous decision victory over Jessica Eye at UFC 192, the No.6 ranked women’s 135-pounder could not be reached for comment.

Pena could face a fine that does not exceed $5,000 or be imprisoned for no longer than 364 days. In a severe case maybe both, according to Spokane municipal code.
