Cape Town - Legendary wrestler King Kong Bundy has died aged 61.

According to the Independent website, promoter and long-standing friend David Herro confirmed the passing of the former WWE star, whose real name was Christopher Alan Pallies.

Bundy is best known for being the heel to Hulk Hogan’s babyface during the 1980s.

He faced Hogan for the WWF Championship in the second ever Wrestlemania in 1986, losing the steel cage match.

It was a historic event, being the first ever singles match at the now iconic pay-per-view event, as well as the first cage match on that stage.

Herro wrote: “Today we lost a Legend and a man I consider family. Rest in Peace Chris.

We love you. Thank you for believing in me.”

Bundy retired from wrestling in 2007 and moved into acting.

The New Jersey native took part in TV show Married... With Children and later went on to star in the hit film, Moving.

Bundy’s passing comes just months after another star of the golden age of the company wrestling announcer "Mean" Gene Okerlund passed away.
