Hartley shows heart in consolation final

Cape Town - Despite much being expected of Bridgitte Hartley in the women’s K1 200m, the South African was left disappointed as she finished just outside the qualification spots in her semi-final on Monday.

Hartley, a former University of Pretoria student, came to Rio with hopes of winning a medal after racing to bronze in the K1 500m in London in 2012.

It was not to be though as the 33-year-old South African struggled to generate any sort of momentum in the K1 200m event.

After narrowly missing out on a spot in the final, Hartley bounced back well to finish fifth in the consolation race.

Hartley muscled her way to a time of 42.06 seconds and will hope to improve in her favoured event, the K1 500m, where she won bronze at London 2012.
