Copacabana - The Olympic Games will be officially launched on Friday, but things on the football pitch are well and truly underway after the host nation took on South Africa at Mane Garrincha Stadium on Thursday.

A dogged South African side, down to 10 men for the final half an hour, secured a 0-0 draw that leaves them in a promising position in the group with fixtures against Denmark and Iraq remaining.

Bars and restaurants all along the Copacabana were alive as locals got behind their team.

They were vocal to begin with, but the silence that accompanied the final whistle was deafening as Owen Da Gama's team pulled of the upset.

Brazil, captained by their trump card Neymar, were supposed to get off to a winning start.

Instead, they met Itumeleng Khune is his finest form and had to settle for the point.

The mood was somber for a little while, but soon afterwards the carnival atmosphere returned.

Here are some pics of some of the more die-hard Brazilians supporters:

This lady had her dog, called 'Pitueha', wrapped in Brazilian colours.

A broken arm didn't stop her ...

Not overly thrilled with the draw ...
