London - South African athlete Fanie van der Merwe has won a gold medal in the men's 100m T37 final at the London Paralympics with a new world record of 11.51 seconds.

He finished just ahead of silver medalist Yongbin Liang of China who finished in the same time and Roman Kapranov of Russia who claimed bronze with 11:57 seconds.

The race finished in dramatic fashion with Van der Merwe winning in a photo-finish as his chest was over the line when he fell at the finish.

It was the second time that the South African had broken the world record in succession after he finished first in the heats.
