Cape Town - Chad le Clos is a cool R500 000 richer following the Fina World Swimming Championship in Doha.

Le Clos returned with four gold medals in his possession - and $43 000 (R500 000) in the bank - after claiming victory in the 200m freestyle and sweeping all three butterfly disciplines - 50m, 100m and 200m.

Each victory was worth $7 000 and the world record Le Clos set in the 100m butterfly saw the 2014 male swimmer of the year bank a further $15 000.

Cameron van der Burgh was the only other South African to pick up a medal when he finished in a tie for second in the 50m breaststroke. Van der Burgh's efforts were worth $5 000 (R57 000).

Le Clos and Van der Burgh's medals helped South Africa finish fourth in the final medal standings.
