Fighters to square up for Women’s Month

Johannesburg - To mark Women’s Month, a women’s boxing tournament will be staged at the Ngoako Ramatlhodi Sport Complex in Seshego, Limpopo, on Friday.

Topping the bill will be the South African junior lightweight 10-round title bout between champion Nosipho Bell from the Eastern Cape, against Limpopo challenger Raider Muleba.

Bell won the then vacant crown by beating Nomampondomise Xotyeni on points at the Lilian Ngoyi Hall, Port Elizabeth, in May last year.

She defended it successfully against the same foe, whom she beat on points at the Mdantsane Indoor Centre in September.

Bell comes into the fight as the firm favourite, having compiled a convincing record of five wins, one defeat and one draw from seven professional bouts.

Muleba does not inspire any confidence to suggest she can dethrone the titleholder. She’s lost six times, with only three victories from nine professional bouts.

Her previous defeat was a points loss suffered at the hands of Ndabayini Kholose for the vacant national lightweight crown at Centenary Hall in Krugersdorp in April.

The main supporting fight on the Mama Rox Boxing Promotion bill will be a junior featherweight eight-rounder between Gauteng’s Smangele Radebe and Natalia Banni from Uganda.

The rest of the bill:

Bongani Vukeya vs Bonita van Jaarsveldt (junior welterweight, six rounds); Skhathele Ngwenya vs Rollen Mulepa (welterweight, four rounds); Zibuyile Magobo vs Mimi Mauwu (welterweight, four rounds); and Maria Martin vs Ayanda Maphosa (lightweight, four rounds).
