Cape Town - Fresh off the success of the Tour de Braai cycling event, the JanBraai Namibia Tour and the National Braai Tour, Jan Braai is looking to encourage trail runners to stop and smell the sosaties, from October 19 to 21.
The JanBraai Marathon, a three-day trail run in the Breedekloof Wine Valley, will place an emphasis on enjoying the natural surrounds and uniting around a fire during and after the run.
Day one will feature an eight-kilometre night run, day two will be 21km, and the final day 13km.
“We are a running-mad country with some of the best events in the world, but our aim with the JanBraai Marathon is not to look for personal bests or world record times," says Braai.
"What we really want is for runners to come and enjoy the beautiful Breedekloof Wine Valley, taste the region’s amazing wines and, naturally, enjoy a braai or three."To break the traditional standards of running events in South Africa, the JanBraai Marathon will feature wine-tasting tables during each of the three days, all backed up with roaring braai fires.
You won't find a jelly-baby in sight at the water points, but rather iconic braai foods like boerewors rolls, chicken sosaties and braai broodjies."I don't think there is a better way to sample the wine of the region than actually running through the cellars and vineyards," says Braai.
"While the run is three days long, and does add up to 42km, we have designed the route to make it manageable for all runners. If you have a pair of running shoes, or ever thought of buying a pair of running shoes, or even once saw someone run, then the JanBraai Marathon is for you."To further shake things up, and to keep the event interesting, day one of the JanBraai Marathon will be a night run, allowing people to leave work on the Friday afternoon without having to worry about taking a full day's leave.
Runners will be able to register from 16:00 onwards, with the event officially getting underway at 19:00. "The local wine farmers and land owners have been very supportive of our requests, and they will be bringing out their best wines for the wine tables.
