Cape Town - South African swimming sensation Chad le Clos reportedly wants to build a world class swimming facility in Cape Town.

According to the IOL website, Le Clos has his sights set on an established stadium where he hopes to drop a 50m pool that could host future FINA world events.

“Once we get the thumbs up from government we can move forward and look for a major sponsor, preferably a big corporate, to back us and fund the project,” Le Clos said.

“It is an indoor facility, a stadium that is not being used, and we are going to drop a pool in there and it has everything.”

Le Clos said he has already sent proposals to a few people.

“I want to host nationals and a World Cup there some day. If I can raise close to R3 or R4 million, then I’ll get the rest, including a 25-metre warm-up pool.”

Le Clos is an Olympic, World and Commonwealth Games champion, as well as the Commonwealth record holder in the 50m and 100m butterfly.

He shot to stardom at the 2012 London Olympics when he won gold in the 200m butterfly and silver in the 100m butterfly.

He also won silver medals in the 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Le Clos has won the Swimming World Cup three times - in 2011, 2013 and 2014 - and could become the first man to win four World Cup Series titles when the third and final cluster of the global short-course tour starts in Beijing on Friday.
