Van der Burgh on Sunday announced on his social media pages that "baby Van der Burgh would be arriving in September".

Van der Burgh, 32, married long-time partner Nefeli Valakelis in July 2018.

Van der Burgh memorably won the gold medal in the men's 100m breaststroke at the 2012 London Olympics and picked up the silver medal in the same event four years later in Rio de Janeiro.

He is also a multiple medal winner at FINA World Championship (long and short course), Commonwealth Games and African Games level.

Van der Burgh hung up his goggles following the conclusion of the 2018 FINA Short Course World Championships in Hangzhou, China.

In March 2020, Van der Burgh contracted Covid-19 during the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. He called it "by far the worst virus" he has ever endured, despite "being a healthy individual with strong lungs (no smoking/sport), living a healthy lifestyle and being young."

Congratulations to the Van der Burghs from the Sport24 team!
