Cape Town - The South African men's team found the going tough - very tough - at the recent FINA Water Polo World Cup in Berlin, Germany.

This year's tournament, which was the 16th edition dating back to 1979, featured eight teams drawn into two pools.

South Africa were drawn in the weaker of the pools, alongside Serbia, Croatia and the USA.

However, that didn't stop the side from being annihilated 21-3 by Serbia, 25-2 by Croatia and 15-6 by the USA.

That left SA bottom of the pool, with 11 goals scored compared to 61 conceded.

SA then faced the daunting prospect of facing Pool A winners, Germany, in the quarter-finals.

Predictably, the Germans proved far too strong, winning 24-5.

SA then faced Japan in the battle for the seventh-eighth spot and went down 21-9.

Hungary were crowned champions after beating Australia 10-4 in the final.

This was the second time South Africa have played in the tournament - having done so in 2014 - and the second time they finished bottom of the standings.
