Daily sports briefs | A radical Rugby Championship plan, English Premier League transfer market set to collapse - and more!
EPL TRANSFER MARKET SET FOR COLLAPSE
Reports in the UK media suggest that big problems lie ahead for the transfer market in the English Premier League and lower divisions. Huge transfer fees are owed by most clubs as they are traditionally paid off in instalments. With incoming revenue on hold, these debts still need to be serviced ... somehow. The days of £100m plus transfers might be a thing of the past as clubs will need to protect themselves against rising debt going forward.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: Something had to give as spiralling transfer fees had made the market ridiculous. Average players were going for £20-30m - a model that is unsustainable.
ON THAT NOTE ... SALARY CAPS BEING DISCUSSED
Football League clubs are set to vote on a proposal to introduce a salary cap - note this would not yet apply to the EPL even though it should - in order to make clubs more financially stable. An unnamed championship club apparently spent its entire TV revenue on one player. This kind of reckless behaviour will be stamped out in the future.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: It's about time salary caps be introduced and they ultimately should be deployed at the top level too. The likes of Alex Sanchez on £500 000-per-week at Manchester United, despite being injured, leaves a bad taste. The US has proved that the salary cap system in their sports codes works well.
YET ANOTHER RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP IDEA BEING THROWN OUT THERE
Over the past few weeks we have heard several suggestions and proposals as to how the rugby calendar should be completed. From Super Rugby being scrapped in favour of a domestic competition to Super Rugby and the Rugby Championship being played at the same time. The latest idea is for the entire Rugby Championship to be played in Perth, Australia. The reasoning being that it requires the least amount of travel for Argentina and South Africa (relatively).
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: Why don't we just host the tournament on Bondi Beach??? Seriously, though, while it's commendable that authorities are thinking creatively, I think we need to give this a little time to breathe before we make any decisions that would unfairly favour one team over another.
IPL 13 SET TO BE POSTPONED INDEFINITELY
The IPL is now set to be postponed indefinitely as the Covid-19 situation in India deteriorates. Originally set for 29 March, the start was postponed until 15 April, but with the country still in lockdown the plan is now for the event to be played later in the year ... if it all.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: With so much money at stake, organisers have a massive task on their hands in finding a slot for this event. Remember there is a T20 World Cup supposed to happen later this year too.
UFC KEEPS ON FIGHTING
Dana White and his UFC dreams just refuse to be counted out. Shortly after having his UFC 249 card for this weekend KO'd by the TV networks, White has bounced back off the canvas and is ready to fight ... to host another major event as soon as 9 May if he has his way. The main event would still feature Tony Ferguson v Justin Gaethje with the venue once again undisclosed.
MYTWOCENTS VERDICT: This time I think it will happen. The state of Florida is allowing WWE wrestling events and Donald Trump is calling for sports to restart sooner than later.
