Cape Town - Strength and conditioning coach Ivan van Rooyen looks set to coach the Golden Lions in the upcoming Currie Cup.

Swys de Bruin, who coached the Lions to this year’s Super Rugby final, will not be involved with the union’s Currie Cup team on a full-time basis due to his commitments at the Springboks.

Afrikaans website Netwerk24 reported on Sunday that De Bruin will again help the Boks as an attack consultant during the Rugby Championship.

He was also involved with the Boks during their Tests against Wales and England earlier this year.

Van Rooyen will therefore take the helm in the Currie Cup but will still get assistance from De Bruin and Lions CEO Rudolf Straeuli while he finds his feet as a head coach, the report added.

Van Rooyen has been involved with the Lions for almost a decade and knows the structures of the union well.

Despite his involvement at the Boks, De Bruin recently said he would remain as head coach of the Lions' Super Rugby team.

“My contract expires after next year’s Super Rugby competition and I intend to honour it,” he said before his side faced the Crusaders in the Super Rugby final earlier this month.

The Lions open their Currie Cup campaign at home against Griquas on Friday, August 24.
