Things have been going so smoothly at Loftus these past few months that Jake White is close to walking on water.

So it's not exactly surprising that the struggles of his Springbok prop Marcel van der Merwe have been magnified.

The 30-year-old, recruited from French giants Toulon back in May, elicited much attention because - as one of the most powerful and consistent scrummers in France - of the proven, classy depth he would provide for Trevor Nyakane.
