Remember that slightly bizarre Super Rugby season when the Stormers topped the overall table before the knockouts, despite scoring fewer tries than anybody else among the 15 teams?

That year was 2012, when their 28 dot-downs from 16 matches (average 1.75 a match) told so little of their march to the top, ahead of cruel derailment in the semi-final stage.

Instead, the anchor feature of their journey to the head of the pile was a dogged, watertight defence expertly supervised by now-Springbok head coach Jacques Nienaber under the broader watch of Allister Coetzee.
