Cape Town - The Boland Cavaliers have received a setback with the news that director of rugby Alan Zondagh has resigned from his post.

According to TimesLIVE, Zondagh cited “excessive interference” from the Boland board as reason for his departure.

He is an experienced rugby coach previously at the helm of Western Province and English club Saracens.

A statement released by Zondagh reads: “Citing excessive interference by the board and the executive of the Boland Rugby Union‚ experienced coach Alan Zondagh has resigned from his post of director of rugby with immediate effect."

Zondagh’s departure will come as a big blow to Boland, who qualified for this year’s Currie Cup Premier Division.

The team had used Zondagh’s Rugby Performance Centre (RPC) in Riebeek West as their training base.

When Boland announced the signing of Zondagh earlier this year, it was stated that the RPC would serve as the primary training headquarters of the Boland Rugby Union and the Boland Cavaliers for the next three years.

The RPC is a state of the art high performance facility which was started by Zondagh in 2005.

Boland, who are coached by Brent Janse van Rensburg, will finish their Currie Cup campaign against Western Province at Newlands on Friday.

They are currently seventh on the log, having won two of their seven games.
