Cape Town - Considering the atrocious conditions at Newlands, defending Currie Cup champions Western Province put in a commendable performance in thrashing their Free State Cheetahs visitors on Saturday.

As it happened: Western Province v Free State Cheetahs

WP won 32-0 after leading 13-0 at half-time.

In a match that was played in continuous pelting rain and freezing temperatures, the home side managed four tries through centre Ruhan Nel, No 8 Juarno Augustus, hooker Scarra Ntubeni and lock JD Schickerling.

WP fullback SP Marais had an excellent afternoon with the boot, landing three conversions and two penalties.

For the Cheetahs, they struggled throughout the 80 minutes and many would agree they didn't deserve to trouble the scorers.

WP picked up a full-house of five points for their victory in what was their opening clash of the shortened 2018 Currie Cup season, while the Cheetahs are already facing the very real prospect of missing the playoffs having lost their second consecutive match.

In next weekend's Round 3 action, WP travel to Mbombela to face the Pumas (Friday, August 31 at 19:00), while the Cheetahs welcome the Sharks to Bloemfontein (Saturday, September 1 at 17:15).
