SA Rugby administrator Monde Tabata’s passing and news that the Southern Kings have suffered another, possibly fatal, slump into bankruptcy has felt like a twin death in one week for Eastern Cape rugby.

Tabata, who oversaw a couple of the mother body’s interventions when things went horribly awry at the Kings, succumbed to Covid-19 related complications at the age of 60 last week.

With him, one felt, went a lot of hope that Eastern Cape rugby could ascend to the levels its talent base demands that it does. Nick Mallett this year called the province the "heartbeat" of South African rugby, but now it’s hard to even feel a pulse.
