Cape Town - Former Springbok coach Jake White has advised current coach Heyneke Meyer to retain Bismarck du Plessis at hooker for their Test against the Wallabies in Cape Town on September 28.

This follows reports that Adriaan Strauss is set to replace the Springbok hooker for the match.

Du Plessis, who has faced a torrid week after being incorrectly red-carded by French referee Romain Poite in Auckland last weekend, is set to start on the bench when the Boks resume their Rugby Championship title chase next weekend.

Speaking to BallzRadio's website, White intimated that Du Plessis’ confidence could take a knock and it could be perceived by the player as a punishment for ill-discipline, and suggested the Springbok coaching staff show solidarity by keeping him in the team.

“Bismarck is one of the best players in the world. I don’t think it’s going to make him a better player to be sitting on the bench.”

“He hasn’t played (much) rugby and he’s been injured for a long time, the more he plays, the better it’s going to be not only for him, but for the team as well,” White suggested.

White lauded Du Plessis' performance for the Springboks against the All Blacks in Auckland prior to his sending off.

“Bismarck was incredible, up until the time he was sent off he could still have been man of the match, which proves his worth to the team,” White said.
