Cape Town - A New Zealand rugby fan has been left with an awkward tattoo following his side's defeat to England in Saturday's Rugby World Cup semi-final in Yokohama.

According to the New Zealand Herald, Shaun Pollard got a tattoo of the Webb Ellis Cup on his calf on Tuesday, which shows the years that the All Blacks lifted the title: 1987, 2011 and 2015.

However, the 37-year-old included '2019' in ink, which at the time, he firmly believed there was "no doubt the All Blacks would lose".

Fast forward to their semi-final on Saturday and the defending World Cup champions were outplayed and sent packing from the tournament by England.

The tattoo went viral on social media after New Zealand's 19-7 defeat, with many labelling the tattoo "arrogant" and "embarrassing".

At least he now has a lasting record of his mistake - and the All Blacks' disappointment at the 2019 World Cup.
