Cape Town - The Blitzboks finished third at the Hong Kong Sevens after defeating Australia 14-12 in a play-off match at Hong Kong stadium.

Despite playing for close to 24 minutes in their semi-final against New Zealand, the Blitzboks were full of running from the start and quickly opened the scoring through Cecil Afrika.

With Australia's James Stannard in the bin for a high tackle, the Blitzboks extended their lead when they made their extra man count to send Siviwe Soyizwapi over following a long range sprint.

Australia pulled a try back through Sam Meyers as the teams entered half-time with the Blitzboks leading 14-7.

Australia opened the scoring in the second half as Boyd Killingworth got over for an unconverted try in the right-hand corner to cut the deficit  to just two points.

They continued to dominate proceedings as South Africa began to run out of steam.

Australia could have grabbed victory after the hooter but Stannard missed with an attempt at poles after the referee had ruled the Blitzboks offside.
