London - Wales will decide later this week whether flyhalf Dan Biggar is fit enough to face Scotland at the weekend, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) said on Tuesday.

Biggar, 26, went off in the first half of Sunday's 16-16 draw with Ireland in Dublin, Wales's Six Nations opener, with what head coach Warren Gatland said was a "high ankle sprain".

Initial reports suggested he could be sidelined for some time, but the WRU said in a statement: "Dan Biggar has made excellent progress with his recovery following the ankle injury.

"Indications are it is not considered long-term. Decisions over his availability for this weekend to face Scotland will be made later in the week."

Bath's Rhys Priestland replaced Biggar at the Aviva Stadium and went on to kick 11 points.

Gatland had been due to name his team to face Scotland on Wednesday, but that has now been pushed back to Thursday to give Biggar more time to recover.

Scotland lost 15-9 to England at Murrayfield in their opening game.
