Johannesburg - Absa has confirmed that the announcement it made earlier on Tuesday -  that it will be debuting a new red and gold Springbok jersey kit - was an April Fool's Day joke.

The campaign was designed to raise awareness for its sponsorship of the Springboks and the imminent launch of the new kit for the 2014 season.

The launch of the new-look green and gold kit is scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 24 when it will be modelled and revealed to the public at an exclusive event in Cape Town.

New Official Technical Kit Partner, Asics, will unveil the Springbok jersey for the 2014 season.

After the earlier announcement, patriotic rugby fans from across the country took to social media to demonstrate their red-hot passion for their beloved ‘green and gold’.

David Wingfield, Head of Marketing at Barclays Africa, commented: “The Springboks, and the Springbok rugby jersey, are an integral part of South African culture, and its value and meaning extends to far beyond that of just being a rugby jersey. It is a representation of the immense passion which we as South Africans have for our country and a symbol of unity which is proudly donned by all South Africans.

“It is often said that South African’s blood runs green and gold, and at Absa so does ours. We are immensely proud to be the official sponsors of the national South African rugby team and we are excited to see the commentary and heightened interest in the Springbok rugby jersey ahead of its official launch on Thursday, April 24, which this campaign has generated.

“We would like to thank both SARU and Asics for their unwavering support with this campaign. Without their buy-in and assistance from the get-go, we wouldn’t have been able to effectively implement the campaign (and make it the success which it has been.) Thank you," concluded Wingfield.

Produced by Asics, the new kit will be of the highest technical standard, setting it apart from other jerseys on the market.

Brian Kirby, General Manager of Asics South Africa, commented: “We are entering an enormously important period for South African rugby, as the team prepares to build towards the upcoming 2015 Rugby World Cup in England. As a high performance sports brand, Asics has pulled out all the stops to ensure the Springboks have the best possible products to help them perform at the top of their game.”
