Cape Town - JJ Engelbrecht says he is warming to the task of being the incumbent outside centre for the Springboks.

With JP Pietersen injured and on his way to Japan, and Juan de Jongh also struggling with injury in recent months, Engelbrecht has emerged as coach Heyneke Meyer's first choice outside skipper Jean de Villiers in midfield.

Engelbrecht scored a brilliant try in South Africa's 56-23 win over Samoa at Loftus Versfeld over the weekend. He powered his way through two defenders before side-stepping a third to dot down in front of his home crowd.

In an interview with Beeld, Engelbrecht descibed the clash against the physical Samoans as brutal.

"I took a few hard knocks!

"(But) I'm starting to feel more comfortable at outside centre. It's also very nice to play alongside Jean de Villiers. He communicates very well. I always know what he's going to do and where I should position myself."

The Springbok players will now head back to their franchises as the Super Rugby competition resumes. Their next Test is in the Rugby Championship against Argentina in Bloemfontein on August 17.
