Johannesburg - Earlier on Tuesday, Springbok supporters from all over South Africa took to social media platforms in passionate protest following the announcement from official team sponsor, Absa, that the new Springbok jerseys would become red and gold.

This April Fool’s day initiative was further supported by a video which features ex-Springbok captain Corné Krige, and current Springbok Eben Etzebeth talking about the new red jerseys as well as print advertisements debuting the new jerseys and photos of players posing in the new Springbok red and gold colours.

However, new Springbok kit sponsor, ASICS, assured fans that as long as they are producing the jerseys, the Springboks won't do away with their traditional green and gold.

Max Keen, Brand and Sports Marketing Manager at ASICS, commented: “We were amused by Absa’s announcement of changing the Springbok jersey to Absa red and gold and inspired by the loud voice of Springbok fans who immediately united as South Africans, to remind all about the proud heritage that runs with the green and gold Springbok jersey.

“For this exact reason, ASICS would like to categorically state that - for as long as we are the official technical kit partner to the Springboks - the jersey will always be green and gold. Our focus will be to use cutting-edge innovations in design and technology, to equip the Springboks with the best possible products to help them perform at their best. And, to be very clear, those products will always be in green and gold,” said Keen.

ASICS’ decision to sign on as the official technical kit partner of the Springboks was made at the end of last year and is in keeping with the brand’s expansion into sports outside of running, where ASICS is firmly established as the top performance running brand in the world.

With the official ASICS Springbok jersey launch taking place on April 24, excitement is mounting for the big reveal set to take place in Cape Town.

“Without giving anything away, all I can say is that the new jersey launch is going to be an event to be remembered and hopefully one that will unite South Africans from all walks of life under a common pride for their national team,” concluded Keen.
