Cape Town - Springbok scrumhalf Jano Vermaak says that despite missing out on the Scotland Test due to injury, he was consoled by his Springbok cap.

Speaking to BallzRadio, Jano Vermaak admitted that he was gutted to have suffered a torn hamstring after finally earning his long-awaited debut in the Springboks' 44-10 victory against Italy at Kings Park in Durban last Saturday.

“Unfortunately that’s the way rugby works. It’s been such a long wait for me. I have been with the Springboks for the last year and a half and I have been on three tours. I have played 101 games in Super Rugby before I finally received my first cap for the Springboks.”

Yet despite his misfortune, Vermaak was philosophical about his injury and chose to see the positive side of things.

“Sometimes rugby is like that. Luckily, I got my start this weekend. I was so excited to finally make the team. I am just so happy to have that cap, to finally say that I am a Springbok,” he said, audibly brimming with pride.

Vermaak was happy with the Springboks' performance against Italy, but said there was room for improvement.

“Heyneke said he was very pleased with the team, especially the five debutants, but in the twenty minutes after half-time the guys stepped back a bit, we need to improve on our second half performance and close down the game.”

Vermaak has begun working with a physio and doing rehabilitation after he suffered a grade two tear on his hamstring. He has been ruled out for the remainder of the Incoming Series and will be out of action for three to five weeks.

He is expected to make his return in the Bulls line-up against the Sharks at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, July 6. Kick-off is at 19:10.
