Cape Town - The new Springbok captain will have to play his provincial rugby in South Africa, a report in Rapport indicates.

According to the newspaper, overseas players will continue to be eligible to play for the Springboks, but SARU has it as prerequisite that the captain is based in the country.

This is due to logistical reasons and public appearance commitments.

This means that candidates like Duane Vermeulen (Toulon, France) and Francois Louw (Bath, England) will not be eligible to captain the Boks unless they return to play their rugby in South Africa.

With Victor Matfield, Jean de Villiers and Fourie du Preez all retiring from international rugby, the Boks are looking for a new captain.

Schalk Burger also captained the Boks in 2015, but he is set to move to Saracens in England later this year.

Local options could be players like Adriaan Strauss, Warren Whiteley and Lood de Jager.

Meanwhile, Allister Coetzee is set to be named new Springbok coach, with SARU to make the announcement official at 11:00 on Tuesday.
